Minneapolis Songwriter rounds; Getting to know the music stage of the Twin Cities
It has been a month and a half of being hooked to the Minneapolis songwriter rounds. Oh, boy. It has been a blast for so many reasons. Where should I start? A roulette of amazing musicians? No charge? It fucking happens every two weeks? Great selection of tap local beer at 331Club? Whoops, it's very harsh to pick just one. Keep reading.
I beg you to picture the following scene. Four to five rounds of 4 songwriters exchanging songs and stories. Beyond a live music event, but a journey along with lyrics and tunes for a span of two hours. Hold on! It's more than that. To embrace the full experience of it as the musicians will perform, but also talk about their songs and lives. Imagine being on a musical vessel departing from an ol' dive bar located in Northeast Minneapolis. This is essentially what is this about. The singers, the public, the fucking dude throwing up in the backyard... we are all in this together, sharing at the same bon fire in a nicer evening of Autumn.
You may go to hear music and have some pints of tap beer, but you leave with so much more. Sit next to me while the singers keep smashing those strings with passion.
To this day, I have attended three nights of these songwriter rounds, and each one has been a completely different experience. While most of the musicians are closer to bluegrass and country kind of style, their performances are very different. Guitars predominate in numbers, but I have seen banjos and even a fucking harp -damn you, Nicky Lemire, you rock hard, get that album done already, please!
I really like to hear what the songwriters have to say about their songs. From county lines to struggling-to pay-your-rent songs. Love encounters and yawnings from those who had departed already. Every night is different.
Regarding the venue, we may disagree on this matter as I love such sort kind of places. Smelly cat by Phoebe Buffay. 331 Club has the right vibe, which may not be for everyone. You see, as I described it to my friends, 331 Club is a box of shoes: it looks like a box of shoes, SMELLS like a box of shoes, and also fucking sounds like a box of shoes. In disgrace but accurately, I have been told this place smells like a mix of alcohol and wet clothes, which some people may agree, it's exactly how a Thursday winter night smells in Minnesota. Ask anybody!
If I haven't lost you after my last paragraph yet, 331 Club also has a wide sample of local beers to choose from. If you're visiting the city or getting to know the brewery staging of the Twin Cities, making a stop here for beer may light some matches in your journey throughout Minnesota.
Again, why would you choose to listen to sad songs on a Thursday night? You may keep asking. Hold down, folks, hold on. The tone of the night is far from merely sad. I can guarantee you will experience a universe of emotions with the variety of songs you will listen to. Having 4 different songwriters making round after round is a winning formula. Sin miedo al exito! Trust my words on this, you will have a great night, but overall you will feel and get in touch with some of the emotions that you may have neglected or not been able to grab on a Friday, Saturday, or any other busy evening of the week, but Thursdays. Oh lord! Thursdays, folks, are for songwriter's music.
